1988 - The 1988 toy line was the first line to include no figures that were featured in Sunbow's original G.I.Joe cartoon, which ended with G.I.Joe: the Movie in 1986. Despite the lack of support from new television episodes, but with the old episodes still in syndication, the toy line expanded yet again to include 48 figures.
The big news this year was the dawn of the fan-favorite Night Force and Tiger Force lines, which featured new paint jobs on previously released figures and vehicles. Repaints are not typically popular with fans, but these figures were repainted as team sets in which the figures had a specific mission. The Night Force figures are a team designed for covert night missions, and the Tiger Force team wears orange and black striped uniforms, presumably for jungle missions.
1988 also marks the year when Hasbro first began naming new figures/characters with the same names as previously released vehicles (For example, a new character is introduced this year named Skystriker. Skystriker is of course the famous G.I.Joe jet fighter from 1983.). This baffling practice makes collecting a little more confusing, along with irritating collectors.
